Abstract:

Play themes offer us a deeper look into a child’s meaning-making system and aids the play therapist in conceptualizing the child and evaluating therapeutic progress.  Additionally, play themes can be used as a tool to help parents understand their child’s progress.  Using case examples, the presenter will provide an overview of play themes and together with participants will examine common play themes that may emerge during the play therapy process.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn common play therapy themes that present in play therapy

Participants will learn ways to use play themes to process progress with parents during parent consultations

Participants will learn and practice language that can be used in play therapy sessions to name and expand play themes

Presenter Bio:

Lydia Kasmoch is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in the state of Texas and a Registered Play Therapist through the national organization, the Association for Play Therapy.  Lydia is the Executive Director and co-owner of Thrive Counseling & Wellness, and is the co-host of the podcast Healing with Purpose.

Lydia has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology from The University of Toledo and a Master's of Arts in Clinical Counseling from Heidelberg University, a C.A.C.R.E.P. accredited university.  Lydia has advanced training in Child-Centered play therapy (CCPT), Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a somatic-based therapy.  She believes our bodies and minds are interconnected and seeks to help clients in her practice to heal holistically and move forward toward the goal of a joyful life.

* Play therapy credit may not be awarded to non-mental health professionals
