About the Event

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:

The presentation Advanced Principles of Theraplay® as a Play Therapy Modality will showcase the history, research, and treatment process of Theraplay®. The U.S Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has rated Theraplay “effective” (highest rating) on the National Registry for Evidence Based Programs and Practices.  The presenter will review the theoretical foundation of Theraplay® to demonstrate the research behind this practice.  The participants will learn the structure of a Theraplay® session with videos and live demonstrations.  The presenter will demonstrate a session with a parent to help participants understand the therapist role in a Theraplay® session between a parent/caregiver and the child.  Participants will also learn the treatment process and learn how to set goals for treatment planning of the client. As a result, participants will be able to identify how Theraplay® differs from other modalities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Participants will learn the theoretical foundation of Theraplay® and the research supporting it to further guide their play therapy practice.
  • Participants will learn how to structure a play therapy session using Theraplay® principles.
  • Participants will be able to set play therapy goals in working with caregivers when using Theraplay® principles.
  • Participants will learn the basic Theraplay® treatment process and explore ways to incorporate it into their own play therapy practice.
