About the Event

Abstract

Our society is growing in diversity, multiculturalism, and intersectionality. Mental health

providers and play therapists hold an ethical responsibility to continue professional development

that addresses race, gender, ethnicity, culture, among many other factors. This presentation on

“Cultural & Diversity Sensitivity Considerations when using Play Therapy with Children and

their Families” addresses a multicultural perspective when using play therapy. In this

presentation, participants will learn about the 4 forms of cultural identities when using play

therapy. Participants will also learn about the 4 domains of cultural and diversity considerations

when using play therapy. Participants also will have the opportunity to practice 3 play therapy

skills to implement when working with children and their families. In conclusion, participants

will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding in ways to integrate cultural and

diversity considerations when using play therapy.

Learning Oobjectives

Biography

Jazmine is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Registered Play Therapist. She has both

a counseling and a teaching heart. Prior to entering the counseling profession, she was a 3rd

grade dual language teacher at Ascarate Elementary for five years.

Her profession in education and post graduate work inspired her at a personal level to pursue the

field of counseling. Jazmine graduated with a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling

from UTEP’s Mental Health Program, CACREP Accredited, in May 2018.

Currently, she works at Counseling of El Paso, PLLC where she serves adults, couples, teens,

children and their families. Jazmine has received training from various therapeutic modalities

such as Play Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Level 1 and 2

Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and is currently

pursuing EMDR Certification.

When working with families, Jazmine uses Theraplay ® informed interventions which is based

on attachment principles and the power of play. She is a Theraplay Foundational Theraplay

® Practioner and is currently working towards becoming a Certified Theraplay ® Practitioner.

Jazmine has served the Far West Texas Association for Play Therpay Chapter since 2020 as

president elect, president and past president and continues to provide community outreach.

Jazmine wholeheartedly believes that the key to joy and satisfaction is heavily based on our

sense of worthiness, the integration of values and lifestyle, and the quality of our relationships.
