Introduction to Autplay for Play Therapists

Abstract

This presentation will provide an introduction for mental health professionals on the basic components of AutPlay Therapy, what an Autplay Therapy session looks like, specific AutPlay therapy interventions and implementing a neurodiversity affirming approach. This presentation will educate professionals on how to best work with neurodivergent children and their families using play interventions that are strength based, supportive and fun. This training will be interactive and provide clinicians with tools to use in the play room to increase engagement, attunement and enjoyment for their clients. This presentation will discuss the AutPlay model of dysregulation and specific ways clinicians can address dysregulation issues.

OBJECTIVES

1. Participants will learn about neurodiversity and implementation of a neurodiversity affirming approach.
2. Participants will be able to describe the components of AutPlay Therapy including what a session looks like, phases of therapy, assessment and goal planning.
3. Participants will learn what mental health goals are targeted in AutPlay.
4. Participants will acquire knowledge of the AutPlay ,model of dysregulation and identify play therapy interventions to address dysregulation issues.

Biography

Roberta Abdo is a native El Pasoan, who has served the community for over fifteen years in the capacity of Social Worker, Behavioral Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor. She has been a Registered Play Therapist since 2019, she is trained in EMDR, TheraPlay and is currently working towards her AutPlay certification. She is enrolled in the University of North Texas to obtain a graduate certificate in Behavioral Analysis. Ms. Abdo established the Play To Heal Counseling Center here in El Paso in 2019. Ms. Abdo’s professional focus and mission is to work with children with disabilities and their families, underserved communities and to help spread awareness, acceptance and inclusion.
